A student of
Jahangirnagar University has been accused of sexually harassing a nurse on duty
at the university's medical center. Accused Mamunur Rashid is a fourth-year
(46th batch) student of the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and
a resident of Shaheed Salam-Barkat Hall. The victim nurse has lodged a written
complaint with the university proctor.
The allegation states that sexual harassment took place around 9:30 am on Saturday (June 4).
According to the allegation, Mamun, a student of the Department of
Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, was injected at around 9:30 am on Saturday
when he touched the nurse's sensitive part of her body. At that time, when she shouted,
her colleagues came to the duty room. The student then moved away. In this
case, the nurse became mentally disturbed. She wishes for a fair trial for this
sexual harassment.
Meanwhile, the accused
Mamun has admitted the truth of this incident Mamun told the media, "I put
my hand on the nurse while taking the injection. The allegation against me is
true."
Acting Proctor of
the University ASM Firoz-ul-Hasan said, "I have received a written
complaint about this incident. The complaint will be forwarded to the sexual
harassment cell of the university soon. Cell and university authorities will
take a decision in this regard."
Condemning the
incident, members of the university employees' union and association locked the
medical center from 9:30 am. As a result, the service activities of the medical
center are closed for about two and a half hours. At around 12 noon, the medical
center's gate was opened on the assurance of the university proctor and
considering taking care of the patients.
Abul Kalam
Hawlader, general secretary of the employees' union, said, "Our colleague
was harassed by a student by the name of the student while serving." We
strongly condemn this. At the same time, I demand the punishment of the accused
subject to investigation within the next 24 hours. If the administration fails
to take any action within the stipulated time, we will go for movement.
Acting Proctor ASM
Firoz-ul-Hasan on the issue of employees' ultimatum said, "Since the
matter is sensitive, I hope the university authorities will make a decision
before the employees' ultimatum."
According to
Mamun's friends and family, he is mentally ill. Last Thursday, he tried to
commit suicide in his own room of the hall, said the warden of the hall,
Associate Professor of the Department of Biochemistry and Life Sciences, Dr.
Mohbubul Morshed.
He said Mamun's
roommate complained to his office that Mamun was trying to commit suicide in
his room. Later, after about three hours of discussion with Mamun and his
friends in the hall office, I brought him to the room. After counseling, it
seemed that he would not take any more attempts. I found out that he is
undergoing treatment. I heard about this incident again this morning. Now his
condition will be known after examination by a psychiatrist.
